Few people are untouched by cancer. If you have not had cancer, you probably are close to a family member, friend, or co-worker who has had cancer or is fighting it today. Because of those shared life experiences, students and staff from the North Daviess Community Schools continue to unite each year to be a part of the Daviess County Relay for Life. For six years now the team from North Daviess Community Schools has worked diligently to make a difference in the battle against this dreadful disease. In those six years the group has raised over $17,000.

Activities start during the fall with the sports teams participating in pink games. The volleyball and football teams both chose a date in order to honor and remember people. The student body supports the cause by dressing up according to the various themes that are set for these games. Plans are now gearing up for second semester. Our basketball teams are both going to be contributing to the team’s efforts by participating in Coaches vs Cancer games. The Lady Cougars started the Relay team’s activities this semester by playing for the cause and not the applause on January 19th against Clay City. The boys’ basketball team kept efforts going with their game on February 9th vs. Northeast Dubois. Volunteers at the games offered silent auction items, baked goods, donation baskets, a memory wall, luminaria bags, etc. to help the ND Relay for Life team meet or even surpass its fundraising goal for the year. Look for more events this spring.

The Relay team also sponsored a design contest for the front of its relay shirt. The theme is “Cougars walking for the cause.” Design submissions closed February 29. A panel of judges is selecting the winning design. The artist who created that design will receive a free t-shirt. North Daviess Community Schools Relay for Life t-shirts are available for purchase during the month of March.

Daviess County Relay will be held on June 11, 2016 at Eastside Park in Washington. It goes from 11 am to 11 pm and will feature laps honoring survivors and caregivers, various games and activities sponsored by the teams, and a luminaria service at dark honoring and remembering loved ones and friends who are fighting/have fought cancer. The luminaria service is the highlight of the event year after year. Students (and their families) of any grade level may be part of the North Daviess Community Schools Relay Team.
