WASHINGTON – It was close. Shelter Mutual Insurance Company pays $5,000 to five charities each year. The charities are chosen by the five winners of Shelter’s annual essay contest. This year Daviess County, Indiana was in the running.
Columbia, Missouri-based Shelter Mutual Insurance Company operates in fourteen U.S. states and focuses on auto, property, business, and life insurances. John Gere, a local agent for Shelter, filled us in on the contest.
“It’s the third year that Shelter has sponsored this company-wide essay contest. It’s called ‘Thankful for Our Communities.’” Gere says, “This was the first year a Daviess County resident entered. Although she didn’t get enough online votes to win, it was a great essay.”
Gere has called Daviess County home most of his life. He moved to the area as he entered seventh grade. He returned after attending University of Southern Indiana along with his high school sweetheart, Andrea. He is a member of the Daviess County Chamber. He owns two businesses in Washington, Shelter Insurance Agency and Mattress by Appointment. And he is ready for next year’s contest.

“The winners are determined by online voting, so my goal in promoting this next spring is to make sure more people are aware.” Gere has a purpose. With more people involved we’ll see a Daviess County charity benefit from this opportunity.
Flex your fingers, people. Spring seems distant today, but together we can bring home a winner.
